My Vote

Today I voted in the South African National and Provincial election.

Very exciting and very calm voting station. It took me only about 5 minutes to vote and go through the whole process to submit my ballot in the box.

I hope my fellow South Africans overseas have done there part as well and also voted in the offshore elections last week.

I’ve done my part !

Google Similar Images

Another innovative offering from Google Labs.

Still in the labs, you can now search for images via a text search, and then browse through the results.  If Google has found some similar images based on the image itself, you just click on the Similar Images link and it shows you all similar images for example, if you select a face shot of Paris Hilton, it will return a result of face shots of Paris Hilton, or a similar effect if you select a full body photo of Paris Hilton it would return the full body photos of Paris Hilton.

Let’s run through an example:

  1. you’ll need to go to http://similar-images.googlelabs.com .
  2. Type in your search, “Friends” (the sitcom) –> the results are returns
  3. You’ll see that some images have the Similar images link below.similariamges1
  4. For my search I’m looking for all the Friend images where they have a group photo with the white shirts and blue pants, so I click on the similar images below the thumbnail.
  5. Now, again it will return a set of results but with images related to the image I selected.
  6. Click on the desired image, and it will take you to the website where the image originates, but notice the next cool feature.
  7. In the top frame it now shows you similar images in case you’d like to jump to another originating site instead of going back to the search results.

You can find more information on the Official Google Blog post here.

And a nice video done by Google:

Ashton Kutcher first with 1 million followers

I just watched the final minutes of the head-to-head race between CNN and Ashton online at UStream to get one million followers (1 000 000).

With mrskutcher ‘s support and all his friends and company input they’ve done it.

Sharepoint Explorer View with WebDAV

Have you been struggling with users that want to access their Sharepoint document libraries through the windows explorer view ..?

I’ve had quite some demanding users whilst deploying Sharepoint internally with the userbase being primarily developers, business analysts and IT consultants.  With these “power users” it can get some darn hard satisfying all, and it is always very important knowing the technologies you work with and how sharepoint works in the background delivering the content to the end user.

Here is whitepaper that can help you understand and troubleshoot the Sharepoint Explorer view.

Internet Explorer 8 on Sharepoint server

Have you experienced some problems with Internet Explorer 8 on your Sharepoint server,

This post on Michaels’ blog gives some tips on how you could resolve some of the issues.

Don’t install Internet Explorer 8 on a SharePoint machine. What will happen? You will no longer have access to any of your SharePoint Web Applications. You will be prompted for your credentials – and prompted and prompted and … At the end, you’ll get an empty page and if you check your IIS log files, you’ll see 401 erros.

Why it happens? I have no clue at all… But it seems that others have the same problem.

What to do against it? Simply de-install Internet Exlorer 8 and – it works…

If anybody knows what to do / configure / pray / pay or whatsoever, please let me know!

Frustated, but at least with my MOSS working again

Top 10 Free Tools for the Desktop

Was playing around today on my machine, trying to automate everything on my notebook, when I realised how many Open Source tools I use.

This started me thinking about compiling a list of my favourite Open Source tools, and here goes:

1. FireFox ( # )

Open Source web browser, faster and more secure.  By default first on the list, can’t live without it!

2. 7zip ( # )

Used to use an evaluation version of Winzip for windows, but 7zip is so much better, compress to tgz and tar files. That’s the way to go.

3. Digsby ( # )

Digsby, the all-in-one instant messanger and social networking tool.  Twitter,Facebook,Google Talk,MSN,Jabber etc.

4. uTorrent ( # )

I used other Bittorrent clients, but this one is the best, and the most effective bandwidth throttler and scheduler, wish I could get it for normal downloads(HTTP and FTP).

5. VLC Media Player ( # )

The only media player you need, plays almost anything you throw at it!

6. FileZilla FTP Client and Server ( # )

What else 😉

7. WinSCP ( # )

Support various protocols including FTP,SFTP,FTPS etc.  Ideal for connecting to your linux boxes over SSH for transferring files across.

8. KillCopy ( # )

Don’t let the looks fool you. This is a new one on my list, started using it a few weeks ago, and so far I’m impressed.  I usually use it whilst copying big files or leaching.  Check out the drag and drop on the window to add files to the queue.

9. Audacity ( # )

Got this installed, and primarily I’m using this free Audio tool for recording workshops I hold with clients.  Sometimes it does feel a bit heavy but seems to only be the GUI though and not really on resources.

10. Notepad++ ( # )

Small appliation I use as the standard Notepad application.  Very powerful with various language support and highlighting.   Saved me a couple of time when receiving weird-formatted files.

Well, of course there are lots more, but these are the once I use daily.

What do you guys use that could be better than the tools I use above ?
