Chuckleberries

Won a Sandton City voucher at our year end function last year, and had to spend my money somewhere, so went to SS and bought alot of random stuff, and went to eat some Chuckleberries burger.

After paying R50 for the burger and getting a bland dry burger, with no-good chips, I have nothing more to say that “Disappointing”.

Our Cafe up the street has better “Slap Chips” than this place.

Microsoft Groove is tha bomb!

I’ve been using Microsoft Groove quite extensively the last couple of weeks, and all I can say GENIUS!!

I’ve only been working on the peer-to-peer version, but am researching the Groove Server to offer more control.

Will post more information and experiences when I get some time.

Internet Sites that run ‘Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007’ list

Found this blog posting on Michael Gannotti ‘s blog “Michael Gannotti On Sharepoint +” where they list a couple of public sites running on Sharepoint, do have a look .

Other ways to Backup and Restore Sharepoint

We required to be able to backup and restore Sharepoint not just from the scheduling interface but there are also additional methods to backup your Sharepoint Web Site.

  • Command-line tool

The command line tool that can be used is stsadm for example to do a farm backup it would look something like :

stsadm –o backup -directory \\myserver\thebackup -backupmethod full

  • Sharepoint Designer

Using Sharepoint Designer you can use the “Backup Web Site” under the Administration menu.

This is just a quick post to highlight your alternatives.

Bill Gates’ last day

Need I say more – funny !!

Indexing PDFs in Sharepoint 2007

PDF IconA thing that irritated me on our Sharepoint server was the fact that the PDF documents were not indexed and as most of our documentation is uploaded into Sharepoint one want to have a quick search through certain libraries to quickly find a word or phrase, and thus it is essential to have this facility working.

So first, I went into the Central Administration->Shared Services and chose the service, and quickly checked under the “Search Settings” if pdf are listed in the list of files that needs to be indexed.

  1. Go to Central Administration->Shared Services and choose the relevant service.
  2. Select Search Settings
  3. Show the list of file extensions to be indexed
  4. If PDF is not on the list, add it…. (you’ll notice that it will just say PDF document and not “Adobe Acrobat Document“) type of name)
  1. If it is showing just “pdf document” it means Sharepoint cannot read the files yet(or dll’s not loaded)
  2. Go to http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2611 and download the Ifilter, and install on the server where indexer is running.
  3. Now go back to the File Types and re-add pdf as an extension and it should resolve and show the application type as “Adobe Acrobat Document

To re-index documents in the library use the “Reset all Crawl content” and got to Schedules and do a run again, it should take 10-60 minutes(or more!!) depending on your settings and size of libraries.

The next thing that needs to happen is you need to set an icon for PDF documents otherwise it will just show a blank icon or the default sharepoint one.

To do this you need to do 2 things

  1. Copy a gif/jpg/png file for the icon to

\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\4\TEMPLATE\IMAGES (the 40 could be a 60 as well …)

  1. Edit the following file and add one entry into the xml

<Mapping Key=”pdf” Value=”pdf.jpg”/>

You should now be able to index and have the results show a nice pdf document icon next to it.

Each family member has a profile which can be viewed by clicking their name in the tree. This helps family members learn more about each other and stay in touch. Family members can also share photos and work together to build profiles for common ancestors.

Geni is private. Only the people in your family tree can log in to your tree and your profile. Geni will not share your personal information with third parties. We will not sell your email address or spam you. Users control which communications they would like to receive from us.

Amazon SimpleDB

Amazon is releasing a new Web Service again, this time SimpleDB.

Amazon SimpleDB is a web service for running queries on structured data in real time. This service works in close conjunction with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), collectively providing the ability to store, process and query data sets in the cloud. These services are designed to make web-scale computing easier and more cost-effective for developers.

Now I just wonder what the performance would be like, they they they’ve simplified it to be very quick and reliable and very lightweight, would like to checkout the API’s abit more to see what they’ve done. And see some stats after beta testing is done.

Ster Kinekor adverts

Again a rant rave from my side.
In the past 2 weeks I’ve watched two movies at Ster Kinekor, on at a Ster Kinekor Junction and the other at a Ster Kinekor Classic.

First movie was the BEE Movie which was at a Ster Kinekor Junction, which was awesome(check out this trailer(12) – funny as hell), which we paid I think R14 for this movie. That is relatively a good price for a movie, BUT is the price really worth it to watch 25 minutes of advertisements before the movie.

Second movie was 30 days of night which we watched at Ster Kinekor Classic, which we paid R40 per person.

Again, now we are paying so much for “Classic”, but whats the difference, a much emptier cinema, and still there is at least 15 minutes of advertisements before the movie this is a total ripoff, same advertisement time just maybe more comfortable seats, or whats the deal with Ster Kinekor’s Classic cinemas.

Are the cinema houses just getting plain money crazy! Or do they have lots of overhead costs to push in so many advertisements before the movie…?

Don’t get me started on the snackbar prices, I reckon they make 200% profit of everything at the snackbar.

Again, just my 2 cents on Ster Kinekor cinemas.

Is Google not getting enough already ?

Looks like Google is trying to get MORE revenue from it’s own advertising system.

Article extract from IOL.

Google is building its own version of communally-constructed online encyclopedia Wikipedia, which consistently ranks among the most visited websites in the world.

The Internet search powerhouse is inviting chosen people to test a free service dubbed “knol,” to indicate a unit of knowledge, vice president of engineering Udi Manber said on Friday in a posting at Google’s website.

“Our goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it,” Manber wrote.

“There are millions of people who possess useful knowledge that they would love to share, and there are billions of people who can benefit from it.”

While Wikipedia lets visitors make changes to its online pages, trusting that people with accurate information will correct errors and misleading entries, Google is inviting folks to author their own articles.

Pictures of authors will be displayed on their knol web pages, according to a sample provided by Google.

“We believe that knowing who wrote what will significantly help users make better use of web content,” Manber wrote.

“Books have authors’ names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors; but somehow the Web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted.”

Google hopes knols will be written on all conceivable topics and says it has no plans to edit or endorse content. Editorial responsibility will rest with authors, whose reputations will be at stake, according to Manber.

While Wikipedia merges topic entries in single articles, knols written on the same subjects will remain separate and “compete” for the attention of visitors, who will be able to give online feedback.

Knol authors will have the option of letting Google post ads on their pages and sharing in the revenues.

Google is the world’s most used Internet search engine and a proven master at mining revenue from online advertising targeted at those making queries and using its free web-based services.

Luring Wikipedia users to its own community-created online encyclopedia promises to be another rich vein of ad income for the US Internet search giant.

More than a third of US Internet users consult Wikipedia, according to findings released earlier this year by The Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Wikipedia is consistently ranked among the world’s top ten most popular websites by Internet research firms Hitwise and comScore.
