User Experience Guidelines for Windows Vista

This morning I was looking for good design/user experience standards and found this MSDN chapter that covers some nice stuff to keep in the back of you mind when developing apps on Windows Vista, and for that sake any other operating system:

Network Administrator Christmas presents

One of my friends is a Network Administrator, and now that it is christmas I did not want to buy the regular biltong or chocolate box.

I’m a ThinkGeek fan, and found the following network wiring tools, which can be worn as a keyring, very nice for network diagnostics and just being simple geek.

At a price of $7 not too bad pressie.

Is Content still King

Since my first days that I had to do with the internet, HTML(the old HTML ;-)), something that always stuck in my mind, was that “Content is King”.

Frog KingThe only way to get a good PageRank(trademark Google) with Google your site must contain good content, have good effecient links/backlinks. This way you could link/write yourself a good PageRank/rating with Alexa.

According to me and seems to be a trend in numerous articles, “Content is still King”, although now the content is not generated by the webmaster but by users, aka user-generated content, thus removing alot of strain from the web site owner, and relying on visitors to interact and create the content for you.

This directly flows into the whole web 2.0/3.0 idea and comes also to the explosion of YouTube, Facebook adn Wikipedia(the biggest user generated content site I reckon).

I’ve read quite a few articles and this is a short summary of my feelings surrounding Content, it is still KING, just the people who make it has changed.

RSSHugger

Well, today whilst reading a few blogs, RSSHugger came up.

As it turns out, I had to have a look, and well, looks quite promising, with Top 100, new etc. lists and the latest posts, this is a must look for new or experienced bloggers.

To register you have to put a review on your site, which in all fairness is right, cause someone is providing this service to you.

Here is an extract from their site to put everything abit more in perspective:

rssHugger is a new website developed to help bloggers promote their blogs, and to help visitors discover new blogs that write about subjects that the readers are interested in. Through the power of the internet and viral marketing, rssHugger looks to bring blog writers and blog readers closer together. If you own a blog, you can get your own page on rssHugger for 10 years for giving an honest review of the site on your blog. If you want to join rssHugger but do not want to review our site, you can pay a one time review fee of $20. rssHugger will be the first ever quality, spam free, and viral rss directory strictly for bloggers

So, have a look maybe you like it!

DVT new COO

Since I’ve started working at DVT I’ve been working quite alot of Derek Hughes, which at the moment was the CEO of DVT, but since then alot has happened, like the AltX listing.

Since then Derek is now moving to become a Non-Exec, and we have a new guy that will be heading the team. The new guy is Ashley de Klerk which previously was at Microsoft SA, Software Futures etc.

Looking forward to working with the new guy and looking more forward to learn as much as I can from him.

GPRS-ing

Was working at a client’s site today, and had to connect to the office to get some mail, and I must say that although there was just GPRS signal, I managed to get everything I needed to(mail, quick gtalk chat and a website or two), over my Cell C Bluetooth connection though my cellphone which is the old Imate KJAMs.

Although enough speed to get basic stuff done, my next phone must definitely have 3G.

Let’s Taste Some Wine

Another new blog created, I’m playing around with blog software and abit of SEO(Search Engine Optimisation) practices.

I’m very keen to learn the tricks of the Wine Tasting arena, so will blog my experiences here.

Sharp-C#

What a week !

Been working on 2 Radical projects in parallel, and also quickly threw a C# app(very small app) together and learning C# syntax in the process as well.

This week I quickly had to throw a small application that performs basic Office automation like “Mail Merging” and opening email clients and adding attachments.

The standard in the office is to use C#, and the only thing that I have experience with that comes close to that is Java.

First day was quite hard just getting to know how C# works and functions but after I found how easy it is to quickly include COM object etc. it was a breeze.

Begin used to PHP, which is VERY loose. C#(or Java for that matter) is very structured and you have to cast etc. variables to get the write output at the end of the day. After getting myself into the “structured” mode it was a breeze.

The first major hurdle was to write a application that will word with Microsoft Office 2000 – 2007, which is not possible(or that is according to my research and resources) with one COM include. The next best solution I found was using late binding, and this just looked like a too much of a problem as the time was limited, so I just created 3 apps, each one including the correct COM reference 😉 .

All n all I’m very impressed with C# and will definitely be playing around much more in the future.

Coming from basically open source background, I still need to get the dev guys to get Subversion running and not SourceSafe….:-(

a Lighter note

Was listening to some MP3’s and found this old CD(which I own) I ripped long-looooong ago.

It was the soundtracks of “Little shop of horrors”, so I quickly went to Youtube to see if there is any cool clips there, and I did find quite a few.

Here is my favourite with Steve Martin as the “Dentist”. — check out the scene where he comes out of the cupboard, just cracks me up.
