Code Versioning System

For the last couple of years I’ve been using Subversion for manage my application codes, and never in my life have I used CVS or SourceSafe.

Actually came upon this youtube video where Linus Torvalds speaks about GIT, the distributed versioning system used for the Linux kernel and some nice features around this.

I’m still not convinced about using this one, sounds abit disorganized still but time will tell ..

Office OneNote

I’ve been using open source and free software for quite some time now, used almost only OpenOffice, ran Thunderbird etc.

At my new job, I’m getting my hands on almost all of Microsofts’ offerings, and I must admit I’m starting to enjoy the experience. Everything is so easy to use and integrate with each other on Windows.

I tried on Microsoft OneNote this week just for keeping track of some projects and what I need to do, and I must say it is very effective.

Again, I feel Linux is the best server platform, I’m running my own web servers on Debian, and also have a file server running at home.

Desktop Linux I must say will probably have to grow abit more, although I am positive that this will also bring some nice innovations to the playing ground.

Starcraft reunion

starcraft.jpgstarcraft2.jpg

When I was at varsity which was like ages ago(think around years now) we used to have numerous LANs where we played Starcraft + Broodwars expansion pack for hours(or rather days) on end.

Since then I’ve started to get busy with work, and some other work, and some other work, and actually got out of the whole habit of playing games.

Last year I played abit of Track Mania Nations which was not too bad, but also could just keep playing for two weeks once or twice in the evenings.

Now that I’ve seen that Starcraft 2 is coming out I’m now trying to get my hands on Starcraft again, saw it’s quite cheap in the shops, under R100 bucks…

Quick Resource Post

Actually found this website loooooOOOnnng ago, just rediscovered it again, excellent resource of information if your a web developer or an aspiring one at that.

New Playground

Today saw me digging in some SQL Server stuff again.

Was given a project where I had to do the physical analysis(BA-work) and also now starting today the programming of the application.

I’m working on a product called Radical, which is an in-house application developed by DVT(acquired Solutional). Radical is sort of a “Access on steroids”, with alot of functionailty features etc. which makes is almost fit any solution you can think of.

The tool/application is mainly used for CRM products, but has been used in finance and loyalty system as well.

Again, this is a new tool to learn, and today did go abit slow, but I can already see that tomorrow will go much better….
eeerrgghh – oh yeah, almost forgot, giving a Sharepoint “selling” presentation to 10 people tomorrow ……

Microsoft Live Labs: Photosynth

Yesterday afternoon I started playing around with Microsofts’ Photosynth beta with their pre created Collections.

First time around I tried to install and run one of the Collections they have available for view, but then it said my notebook’s graphics card is not supported, or rather I’m too LOW specced.

So now got it working on my work notebook.

Photosynth runs snuggly in IE or firefox, and gives you a nice 3d rendering of the place your viewing and what angels etc. photos has been taken with the use of small red cameras at the various spot. The only problem I had with this new technology, is that after about 5 minutes I was bored with the “Application”.Although the technology is breathtaking though.

I must admit it is amazing how they did this all just from a set of pictures, and I assume the software that will come out will automatically generate these 3d worlds from 2d images. I reckon this is only the first step towards something great. Congrats MS for a great initiative !

iMate KJAM

Oooh, got a new phone, old one just died on me !

New smartphone real nifty, although still getting used to not having a keypad and tapping your way around.

Communication features excellent, connecting through my wireless LAN at home and at work, and when on the road connecting to mail and internet through good old GPRS.

So far impressed, although the occasional OS freeze….

eNatis story

Well, as everybody has heard, the eNatis website has been hacked last night…. or rather that’s what the media claims. It was actually defaced.

Some media hype has suggested that the eNaTIS system was hacked recently. This was apparently due to someone leaving a comment on a page of a section of the eNaTIS public web site (this site). The suggestion that eNaTIS was hacked is actually laughable. The eNaTIS public web site is in no way connected at all to the eNaTIS system. This choice was a deliberate design choice.

Actually it was just a defacement of one of the pages, most probably a script-kiddy(some kid/inexperience computer nerd that uses tools freely available on the internet) which haven’t even started growing a beard yet.

The thing that disturbed me the most actually was not the defacement, but the fact that they are using an open source cms system called Joomla for their site, and an outdated version at that which means security holes, which “script-kiddies” over the internet quickly identify and deface for fun. The website one can quickly sees has been put together but just replacing a few images here and there from existing theme packs available for download on the internet.

I would reckon for a project that has driven R46m out of taxpayers’ pockets would at least have something decent as a “public face” for the system . Yes – the website is not “connected” to the eNatis system but still in essence there was a compromise, maybe the compromise bought someone their 3rd M3 ? Although Joomla and other are good systems and can be used, but with the right amount of skill behind it.

Thanks for showing us where our money really is going. Hopefully soon the whole eNatis story will blow over and we will get our money’s worth out of it.

New Way Of Work

Enabling informed and timely decision-making, and manage and protect critical information.

I’ve been spending most of my days the last week researching collaboration inside the corporate environment and found that Microsoft’s Sharepoint offerings are quite unique in some ways and one of the major advantages over any competitor(except paying quite alot) is that everything “just works” with no or little hassle – that is if everything if running within the Office Suite.

With Open Source solutions, you have to through 3 or 4 applications together to get the same functionality and still not be at the same milestone as what Sharepoint has set.

At the beginning it took me quite some time trying to get information out of the Microsoft sites like TechNet and all the others, as I’m not used to work in the Microsoft space that intensely, but after awhile it got quite an easy task finding the “right information” somewhere on one of the subsites etc. They also got some nice vids for the “NWOW”.

This is a totally new product for me and so far I’ve been more than impressed!
