Poaching at Krugersdorp Game Reserve

I live about  2km from the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, just west outside town towards Tarlton.

I was shocked to find out today, that 2 white rhinos was unneccesarily drugged on Friday, horns taken and left to bleed to death.

Illegal hunters killed two white rhino on Friday, which brings the number of deaths at the hands of poachers at the reserve to three in as many months.

In the latest attack, poachers cut the horns from two rhino.

Both animals bled to death, and police are investigating the possibility that the same poachers were behind both incidents.

Phillip van Rooyen works with the reserve said the poachers darted the animals from the air before landing and cutting off their horns.

“We’ve got reason to believe that it’s a small chopper they used. They darted them with home made darts, and obviously the rhino woke up and bled to death,” he said.

One of our friends works at the Reserve and has pointed us to the photos on Facebook as well which I posted here as well.

What a Tragedy! Two Beautiful Animals killed for the Greed of Man.

Build your own Notebook Stand

Want a notebook stand to tilt your notebook a bit and help keep it cool.

Why not grab yourself a couple of plumbing pipes and build yourself something like this :

or if your really lazy, buy a prebuilt one for $55 (which is a bit ridiculous)

Windows 7 and Folders on the Taskbar

In my working environment I used to have shortcuts on my Quick Launch bar to various file shares at work and at home, but since I’ve upgraded to Windows 7 I can’t seem to create shortcuts on the Taskbar(or in Windows 7 ‘pin’ it to the Taskbar).

Dhiren has come up with a quick way to be able to open up a folder shortcut around this issue.

Basically he created a small application(9KB) called Springboard which you create a shortcut to, and provide a “parameter” for in your shortcut and pin the shortcut to the Taskbar.

Very nice one Dhiren, thanks – will help a lot for me.

At home I have a network share that contains all kinds of “Knowledge Resources”.  I’ve tested Dhirens’ Springboard application, and customised the icon in the Taskbar for my Shortcut and it does really work nicely.

Another option to use in Windows 7 is to use a folder as a toolbar, right click and select Toolbars->New Toolbar… and select the folder, and you would get a nice “dropup” menu to the folder.  This doesn’t stop there, you can also double click on the folders within the “Toolbar” to open up those folders in an explorer window.

My suggestion : “A definite watch this holiday”

360 views of cities in the world

Whilst preparing for my “Day of the Vow” post I came across 360cities.net .

Seems like these guys are doing what Google is trying to achieve with their Street View.

360cities.net host, commission and develop the largest and fastest-growing collection of immersive, panoramic images on the web.

They also have integrated their offering into Google Earth to provide even more convenience in finding their panoramic images all over the web.

Another nice feature I like is embedding these panoramic images on your blog, which can add immense value to someones’ site providing something very close to reality to the end user.

Day of the Vow

Today is a public holiday in South Africa called “Reconciliation Day“, which means a whole day of doing almost nothing.

voortrekkermonument

Reconciliation Day is a public holiday in South Africa held annually on 16 December.  The intention is to foster reconciliation and national unity.  The holiday came into effect in 1994 after the end of Apartheid.

Before 1994, when the South African government changed the holiday to reconciliation day it was called “Day of the Vow” which was not an Apartheid holiday but an Afrikaans religious holiday.

In 1838, the Afrikaans Trekker commando bound future descendants to a vow to God to commemorate the day as a religious holiday, taking the day as a sabbath day and remembering this day where the Trekkers won the battle against the Zulus at Blood River.

In my family we still take the 16th as a sabbath but also believe in the morals and believes in the Reconsiliation Day that was brought to the forelight, but we won’t forget the past.

One Match Stick

Starting off with a single match stick and trading it for something of a little more value. This is the latest venture a few adventurous net entrepreneurs are taking on.

Telena Simpson, from www.onematchstick.co.za is the local South African trying to end up with office space for her business.  She started in June 2006 and already is currently on 375 T shirts to trade.  That is quite amazing, going from something worth almost a cent to something for thousand times the value in 3 years.

Apparently Telena was inspired by another similar project, called OneRedPaperClip, where Kyle MacDonald traded his red paperclip for a house in a couple of years – wow!
Kyle also wrote a book called One Red Paper Clip, which is availalbe at Kalahari as well where he covers all his trades up to where he gets his house, and now he is trading his house.

Truely amazing online endeavours taken on by these people, what do you guys think about this ?

Tiger Woods Game Out Now!

It’s Friday, and that means time to start relaxing into the weekend.

With the whole saga regarding Tiger Woods accident earlier this week and the cheating allegations, people did not waste time to jump on the bandwagon with jokes and viral videos and pictures hitting the social circles with a storm.

Here is a great example, a flash game where you(“As Tiger”) have to drive away from your golf club-wielding wife.  This is just proof that some flash developers really can keep up with real world events and get something out there quite quick.

New Online Gaming Service

I’ve been playing Battefield 2 online since beginning of this year, sometimes burning a few hundred megs of my cap each evening, running on SAIX Gaming Servers. Even on my 384 kb line through Cybersmart, I get decent pings like 60/70ms.

WebAfrica has announced that they will be launching their own free gaming service, which offers it’s ADSL clients to the “FreeZone” to game online.  This service will not affect ADSL clients of WebAfrica‘s monthly cap, thus saving dedicated gamers a lot of bandwidth a month to spend on other internet activity.

I think the fact that if your a client of WebAfrica and get the ‘bandwidth’ free to play online, is a great marketing weapon, which could help them launch with a large user base when they launch on the 10th of December.
