Nedbank Media Event Mistake – ouch #fail

Earlier today I received an email from Nedbank telling me that Nedbank has invited me and my spouse to a Nedbank dinner hosted by the Nedbank CE and MD.

Like WOW, this would be a great initiative from Nedbank inviting their loyal customer to such an event.

Well – NOTTT!!!

If something is to good to be true, IT IS.

Received this impersonal and very short email a few minutes ago :

To whom it may concern

You have recently received an invitation from Nedbank to attend a Dinner Function. The email was send to you in error. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Please contact me personally should you have any queries at [email protected]

Kind Regards,

Stephan Potgieter
Managing Director

They could have at least used my name from the mailing list on the apology instead of “To whom it may concern”

Wonder how many people recieved this ?

There is my#fail for the day.

Micro Digital Video Camera

I found this very nifty Sports Camera at Mantality.co.za today.

A small, good quality camera with various adapters to fit on bicycle helmets, jogging gear or even on your skis when going for your yearly oversees trip.

The Camera is called the Veho™ Muvi Micro Digital Video Camcorder which boasts with 2 megapixel camer with very cool voice activated start/stop funcationality.

This camera is very small, so it won’t keep you behind, with almost the size of your thumb, it is real compact.

I would recommend this camera for the extreme sports and lifestyle enthusiasts and of course those geeks and gadget freaks out there.

With a price tag at around R1500 this is real good value for money.

Home Network Upgrade

After all the renovations at our house, I was inspired and decided to upgrade the Home Network a bit, but this upgrade will not really be hardware but more getting the wiring organised.

The goal of this exercise was to have more network points throughout the house, making it more accessible especially when you have to copy that big file across and wireless just don’t crack it.

So after my DIY exercise, I managed to get 8 points at 4 different locations :

1. Study #1 – My Study

In this study I placed a 3 port sunken in faceplace, but as you can see the end product was a bit like the way IT people do DIY … lol – the leveler had some kind of bug in – I’m sure.

2. Study #2 – Wife’s Study

Added 3 network points with 2 double wall boxes. The 4th network point is forwarded to our Lounge/Kitchen area.

3. Lounge, Kitchen Area

In the lounge I have one point that connects my Mvix to the network on hardwire, as wireless sometimes gave some issues whilst streaming.

4. Kids room

Last but not least, there is one network point in one of the kids room for later expansion.

I tried to keep the network cabling as tidy as possible, and obviously I’ll improve at a later stage.  I decided to put the network switch and router above my door in my study room, which is central to most locations in the house, and out of the way.

As you can see I only have my old 4 port wireless router at the moment, so that means at the moment only 4 of the 8 ports is live.  I plan to add another Gig switch here for faster copy between machines, as 100 MB is not enough.

Basshunter – I Promised Myself

I just love Basshunters‘ latest music videos, each one continueing the stories from the previous one, here’s the latest.

Hewlet Packard giving me a Server

At the start of August this year I attended TechEd Africa.
As some of you would remember I was the lucky winner of one of Hewlet Packard South Africa’s giveways at the event, unfortunately I did not get the prize as I was not present at the drawing of the prize.

A few days ago, a representative, Samantha from Hewlet Packard contacted me with great news, they saw my grievance on my blog and decided to give me the same server with Windows software!

At the event they actually sold these machines(only the machine) for a giveaway of R499, so I already bought two(which was the minimum).

So now after I recieve this one as well, I will have 3 x Hewlet Packard Proliant M110 G5 servers.
proliant-ml110
I’ve already installed one of my machines at home with FREENAS, which is running smoothly, though just a “glorified” file server.

Good quality and reasonably priced(not the same as the TechEd prices though) for anyone wanting to buy an entry level server for their small SME or organisation.
This is a very sturdy and compact system, with enough additional space for adding a couple of more drives in. The G5 also come with RAID( 6 port SATA controller with embedded RAID (4 available for Hard Disks)) support which is a good start to experiement for from home.

With these machines, you get 250GB SATA HDD and 1 GB RAM as well.

Thank you Hewlet Packard for getting back to me on, great to see companies following the web and finding and helping out consumers with their problems.

HP does not want to give me a PC (UPDATED:FEEDBACK RECEIVED)

UPDATE : Hewlet Packard has contacted me and offered me the same server and software as I won at TechEd, you can read more here.

I am currently at TechEd and have not had time to post for some time, not due to connectivity problems but actually due to not having time to get to it, being busy with session upon session.

Yesterday I entered into a competition at the HP stand here at TechEd Africa 2009 in Durban.

Later the after whilst in my last session for the day at around 17h15,  that goes on till 18h30.  about 18h10 I checked my phone and saw a missed call and a voice mail.

Listening to the voicemail it was HP that were trying to contact me, the missed call being at 17h17.

So I quickly went to the HP stand and they told me that I won the M110 G5 Server that was up for grabs. Gr8, but then the bad news.  They say they couldn’t get hold of me and gave the prize to someone else.

The 1 time I thought I won something and my excitement for nothing!

This however is a bit unorganised, as almost everybody is here to attend the sessions which are presented and not to stand around waiting for prize draws.

I do feel a bit ripped off though, but they did say they will send me something to Joburg – probably a stressball or something, but I’ll wait and see if that happens….

Well, now to attend the next session, will post some pics later, here is me earlier today…  [link to pic]

Thanks again HP!
