Vernon Koekemoer Phenomenon

Vernon Koekemoer has been floating around the internet like a run-away fire.

I previously made one a post(this post) about him and on the same day the traffic on my blog trippled almost immediately.

This is really an amazing phenomenon, just by 1 picture this guy is famous ?

The picture below is of “Vernon Koekemoer”(real name starts with a C by the way) in a Keg.

My VisualCV

I’ve joined  VisualCV about a week ago, and just totally forgot about creating my CV, and just today went through my mail and found my welcome email.

VisualCV is a FREE service (Why do I keep on uppercasing FREE?) whereby you can build yourself different CV’s/Resume’s which can include video, picutres and a portfolio of you best work samples.

These CVs can be securelyshared to different users, employers, colleagues and friends, or even made public and you can then control who sees what on these publications.

Google Reader

I’m using Google Reader as I have basically 3 computers on which I work, 1 work laptop, another personal laptop and another random pc at home, so I like the idea of using one interface website that remembers what I’ve read and what I found interesting(by Star-ring them).

So far Google Reader has been a valuable part in my online life keeping track of certain blogs and gives a nice and clean experience.

A real “Flying Saucer” on the West rand.

Flying SaucerOne of South Africa’s most oddest and unique houses, the “Flying Saucer” on the West Rand is up for sale. ( private property )

I’ve actually seen it online for quite some time, but while browsing some blogs this morning, I came upon a few other links of auctions in the US and others where there are also “Flying Saucers” for sale.

But of all the ones I found the South African one looks the most majestic and most impressive.

Proudly South African ! We even win in the alien race 😉

Scalability by YouTube video

This is one of the first online videos that I really-really found informative and found real interesting.

This is a video about one of the YouTube developers and he is sharing some of the problems they experienced in their growth, and shares some of the REALLY NICE tricks and hacks they did to get all the juice out of their servers.

They had just a handful of staff members involved with the creation and main development, just think about that profit sharing …lol

and WOW!!! they push out 10GB per second from their site!!!

Amazon S3 Solutions

I was looking into Amazon Storage Services again (s3), as I was thinking of writing a small application for backing up my personal documents daily.

But before I start I just quickly had a peak at the Solutions catalog, and found quite a few nice solutions built around S3, and some other AWS(Amazon Web Services) components.

Also something very interesting is Amazons’ Elastic Compute Cloud (E2) platform .

If I”m not mistaken, Vinny Lingham also mentioned that they are looking at using cloud computing Synthasite – though I stand to be corrected on this one …

Amazon EC2 presents a true virtual computing environment, allowing you to use web service interfaces to requisition machines for use, load them with your custom application environment, manage your network’s access permissions, and run your image using as many or few systems as you desire.

To use Amazon EC2, you simply:

  • Create an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) containing your applications, libraries, data and associated configuration settings. Or use our pre-configured, templated images to get up and running immediately.
  • Upload the AMI into Amazon S3. Amazon EC2 provides tools that make storing the AMI simple. Amazon S3 provides a safe, reliable and fast repository to store your images.
  • Use Amazon EC2 web service to configure security and network access.
  • Choose the type(s) of instance you want to run.
  • Start, terminate, and monitor as many instances of your AMI as needed, using the web service APIs.
  • Pay for the instance-hours and bandwidth that you actually consume.

Microsoft Groove Bandwidth Woes

We’ve succesfully rolled out MS Groove within a few business units at the moment, and even our Directors are using it now.

Last week I found that adding a 100MB file in a workspace that has about 10-15 people in.

It knocked down our internet access totally as the relay server were pointing to MS’ relay servers and the file was uploaded and downloaded from the MS servers and NOT peer-to-peer transfers.

We are now looking at way to all workspace members always use the fastest connection available and not draw from the internet …

Setting or changing next Auto Increment(Identity Seed) value

After my last post I got a few mails asking me how to reset the Auto Increment ID, or how to set the next ID to a certain value.

Well, here you go:

  1. Open up SQL Enterprise/SQL Server Manager
  2. Open the relevant database
  3. Right click on the relevant table and choose ‘Modify’
  4. Select the auto increment / identity column
  5. Find the Identification Specification option and expand
    1. Now you can change the Identity seed to the desired value(remember to make it more than the MAX of that column of the current data)

Can open To-Do list items, but Blank Forms don’t open

Metastorm BPM LogoYesterday, I was onsite at a client where they had some database problems, and had to revert back to one of their backups. For some strange reason they merged two backups(as I can derive from them) together. This caused havoc on the ework database though. I don’t know what the DBA did but for some strange reason you could open up To-Do list items, but not Blank Form items. NO error was logged to the Event Log or could be found in the Services Manager.

First I tried a few test and then it struck me – the FolderID’s was out of sync, as the guy who “merged” the database did not take this into consideration. I tested, and saw it was only the FOLDERID table which’ next ID was too low, and lower as the actual latest entry in the EFOLDER table.

To fix the problem, I just set the next ID(Identity Seed) in SQL Server management Studio for the table FOLDERID to be higher than the last folderid in the EFOLDER table.

This seem to have fixed the problem, though we are still testing to make sure that they did not break any other tables or e-Work core functionality in the data structure.
